Alice Flora Jacobs Voorhis, 96, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017 at her Indianapolis home. She is survived by her daughter Cheryl Shorr (Indianapolis), her daughter-in-law Mary June Voorhis (Abilene, TX), 4 grandchildren [Kevin Voorhis (Westfield), Brian Voorhis (Noblesville), Don Voorhis (Taylor, TX) and Deborah Hinton (Abilene, TX)], and 9 great-grandchildren (Indiana and Texas). She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Merrill C. Voorhis (Indianapolis), sons Merrill Edward Voorhis and Larry Voorhis, daughter-in-law Judy Voorhis, and grandson Doug Voorhis.

Alice was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 13, 1920 to James T. Jacobs and Bertha N. (Gilbert) Jacobs. She graduated from Tech High School.  She married Merrill C. Voorhis of Indianapolis on July 14, 1939 in Greenfield.

Alice enjoyed many hobbies including crocheting, nature/gardening and bowling.  She enjoyed crocheting and often made items for family and friends including blankets, stuffed animals, crosses, holiday figures, and chair covers.  She loved nature and had a green thumb as evident by the several beautiful flower gardens, bird baths and bird feeders in her yard.  She and her husband Merrill bowled in a senior league well into their late 80s.  Alice was always the highest female bowler in the league.  She loved music and often went with daughter Cheryl and friends to hear bands.  She even attended several pool parties.  Friends and patrons were astonished at her “youth” even though she was in her 90s.

Alice touched many lives and will fondly be remembered as a kind, gentle person. She was usually quiet, and had a quirky sense of humor. As the family matriarch, Alice hosted family dinners to celebrate birthdays, holidays and special occasions.  Her cakes and cupcakes were legendary.  Her love for playing games, especially cards, is often a favorite family memory.  She remembered her departed loved ones by placing cut flowers on each grave every Memorial Day.  Alice will be greatly missed by those who love her. May she rest in peace.

Services will be private for the family. Interment will be at Union Chapel Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Indiana Funeral Care is honored to care for Alice and her family during this difficult time. We encourage you sign the online guestbook at www.indianafuneralcare.com

Mama Alice as I affectionately called her was a wonderful lady to have a conversation with with an uncanny memory for so many happy times in her life often sharing memories with us which usually ended in laughter. It was a joy to share those memories with us and she was always ready with a witty remark when you least expected it. You will be missed dearly and may you rest in peace as you unite with Merrill and your family in heaven.

The measure of a well lived Life is not what all they’ve accumulated, but rather, through the Lives they have touched. Alice was well like and she leaves behind a gift to those that knew her.The gift of remembrance. Now, go be with you those gone before you that you loved and missed. Rest Peacefully.
